Jay is correct in saying that torque was not restricted with the new 5 speed auto tranny:
"Automatic Aero models, which are now equipped with a new five-speed automatic transmission, also benefit from extra performance. Previously, torque was restricted to 243 lb.-ft. with the older four-speed auto, but the new five-speed auto- gearbox allows full utilization of the Aero engine's 258 lb.-ft. torque reserves for improved mid-range responsiveness."
"Just as importantly, the gearbox is capable of handling the Aero's high 258 lb.- ft. torque figure. The previous four-speed automatic was limited to 243 lb.-ft. of torque, so drivers opting for the new automatic in combination with the more powerful Aero engine will notice not only a smoother and better-responding automatic but also appreciably more mid-range performance. In fact, Saab will be one of the first European manufacturers to put this much torque through a five-speed automatic in a front-wheel-drive configuration. "
Lou is correct about the torque restrictions in 1st and 2nd gears to limit torque steer-but this applies to only the manual versions AFAIK. I don't remember offhand what the actual torque value was for those two gears. SAAB has restricted torque in the first 2 gears of the manual versions going back to the 1994 900SE Turbo. For the NG900, it was in lieu of the fact that TCS was unavailable in the Turbo versions.
I don't believe the automatic versions of the NG900/9-3 or 9-5s had torque restrictions in the lower gears per se, just an overall torque restriction compared to the manual versions-this to prevent the auto versions from self destructing, since the auto versions couldn't handle the peak torque output like the manual versions could. I may be wrong on this last bit but I don't think so...
