I installed front EBC greenstuff pads on the front rotors at 162 miles. My prime motive was to no have the stock pads trash the Aero rotors. There are no known aftermarket rotors to replace these and these are expensive at the dealer.
I installed as described, search drs<underscore>install
The use of neversieze on the backing plates as described seems to have worked well. The front brakes never make any sound. I did bed these pads in agressively to burn off the organics in the pad surface and to compact this surface as well.
Little dust, yadda yadda.
Later on I installed EBC greenstuff rear pads, and sometimes I hear these with light pressure. Typically when backing out of the sloped driveway. I have a couple of things that I would like to try with these to better understand the issue with the rears. One thing, the EBC rear pads, which are not a standard fitment, don't have springs of the same depth where they fit into the piston on the inboard side. So I feel that the inboard pad is not secured to the piston as it should be.
I have some stick-on lead weights that will be my first experiment.
As for feeling the improved braking. With my 95SET this was greatly apparent. That braking system has braking effort proportional to petal pressure. The 9-5 has brakes where the braking effort is proportional to how far down you push the petal, and the petal pressure does not seem to relate to braking effort. It feels like an old GM design in that respect. So the change of braking effort maybe hidden to some extent. And certainly the Aero has very strong brakes anyways. And the OEM pads on the 95SET might have been low in performance, but they were good for over 130,000 miles for me. So I am thinking that the 9-5 OEM pads may have rather good performance, and the penalty is dust and rotor&pad wear.
And when the EBC pads were new on my 95SET, until I bedded them in agressively, they had really bad performance. After that the braking was much stronger than ever and remained that way. With the 9-5, the initial performance with the EBC pads was not bad. A real surprise! What happened? I am assuming that the baking on the 95SET was marginal from the get go and that the 9-5 Aero has such capacity that this and the differnet power brake characteristics hid some of the expected effects.
So no EBC complaints here. I am saving my Aero rotors from designed in destruction. My cost of ownership will be lower in the long run. I am sensitive to the issues that others have experienced. All that I can say is that the results seem to vary and the installation details will always vary. So are EBC installs trouble free? Not for all. But OEM pads are guaranteed short life for pads and rotors. If you have an Aero, the implied costs are very high. If you don't have an Aero, and you do your own work with aftermarket pads and rotors, the cost vs benefit analsysis is not so overwhelming.
The 9-3's, base and Viggen and the 9-5's base and Aero all use the same pads.
