While looking for new brake pads to eliminate the front dust issue, I considered placing different pad materials on front and rear. Although I didn't go this route I could find only one reference within all the brake manufacturer's internet info discouraging this - and it wasn't a universal warning!

EBC tells customers not to install their Gren pads on the rear of a vehicle unless Green pads are also on the front. Greens on front only are apparently OK.

Modern braking systems are often diagonally paired (i.e. one circuit does left front and right rear) rather than front or rear only. This makes use of different pads less of an issue or a non-issue.

Besides - what happens if you replace worn out front pads with new OEM parts and leave the exisiting, half worn, factory pads in the rear? Do the old rear pads still match the characteristics they possessed when new? Isn't this the same "problem" by having friction materials at front and rear that differ from the new condition factory specs?

Your point is a valid one and should be considered by all owners when replacing their brakes. I personally recommend using the same or similar friction materials front and rear (i.e. no high performance pads in the front while OEM pads in the rear). But using a different manufacturer or slightly different material on one end of the car which has characteristics whithin the same family (street, street-sport, performance) as the pads at the other end, should not be a problem.
