There is no problem having different compounds on the front and back. The ABS and electronic brake force distribution will handle this and the effects are probably minor compared to a heavily loaded trunk. And with different degrees of braking effort there are different degrees of weight transfer and this has a huge impact on the rear brakes wanting to lock up.
The comment of EBC not on the rear with OEM type pads up front is obviously directed to a situation where there is no ABS and one does not want the rear end to lock up which would cause the vehicle to spin out. That does not apply to the 9-5 with ABS and ESP etc.
Diagonal braking circuits do not have any impact at all with 4 channel ABS etc, unless you burst one brake line....
So things are not that critical with these vehicles. The biggest issue would be someone getting track or racing compound pads and finding that they could not stop very well when these were cold!
Remember that the limit to stopping power with these vehicles will be the tires, not the brakes!
At the Aero Academy, it was interesting to do the emergency braking exercise, then to repeat trying to find the ABS control point and try to beat the ABS braking performance. The Aero's on active ABS do have a large amount of tire lockup, tire smoke and rubber dust. As you watch the other drivers you can see this going on. We had the brakes stinking hot at times.
