The USA Owner's Manual (which I have seen) and the Swedish Factory Service manual (which I own), the admonition is "If 5W oils are used, they must be of fully synthetic or synthetic based" This in the midst of a a long paragraph on recommended viscosities. It doesn't take a philosopher or a linquist to assert that when the "If 5W..." sentence clearly implies that "If not 5W" then synthetic is not rrequired. Then there's the 15W40 recommendation for markets where 10W30 or 10W40 are not available ... I know of no synthetic 15W40 oils.

The 2002 manual (which I own) recommends synthetic oil, and merely specifices ACEA A3/B3 and a 0W, 5W, or 10W viscosity for the low temperature rating. It does not include the song and dance about matching viscosity range to ambient temperature range.

These are the manuals I have seen and I own, and the 2002 is AFIK the current recommendation for the 9-5.

BTW, I agree about conventional oil breaking down faster than synthetic, but that's not the only reason to use it. Conventional oil simply can not provide the same lubrication in terms of low temperature viscosity and high temperature, high shear viscosity. The ability of synthetic oil to withstand a turbo engine's heat and pressure without breaking down as fast can be answered by simply changing your oil more frequently. The ability to better lubricate the entire engine over the full range of operating temperatures can not be answered.
