Your manual and material seem at odds with the 2x 2002 SAAB USA cars (1-9-3 SE and 1 9-5 AERO) in my garage. One purchased in the USA iin Michigan specifically, 12/2002 and the other 9/2003. Both manuals in these cars puchased 9 months apart with regards to oil specification are IDENTICAL--and in disagreement with your findings.
I cannot comment on what I cannot see from your side, document-wise. It seems other USA-market posters agree to not understand your documentation as well. Perhaps this was a Euro Delivery ? and there-by the difference in the documents.
So lets solve the REAL PROBLEM as to how/or why your documents can vary so dramatically in the USA marketplace?
And as I have posted to Jason, other high-marque EURO manufacturers DO INDEED state that if you cannot find the BMW-brand of MB brand oil to use, to use a synthetic oil minimum spec of SJ.
Hence, the "by-market" phrase the legal-beagles of SAAB and GM add to the owners manual.
Again, it matters not to me if you personally like my posts or not--the big picture is some are direct, some are humorous, some are OT, but the info is still very useful in providing successful, road tested, proven advise to newbee SAAB owners.
I would advise you that if you don't like my info--or my presentation of it--then don't click on me. It's impossible to please everybody on a forum. I gave up trying 900 posts ago.
"A previous owner of a c900" comment you write---there was a time when old 99's and c900's were affectionately compared to Harleys for all the oil leaks/weepings/seepings they had.
So get out there, uses any high quality name-brand full synthetic oil, and your car should easily go past my 1983's mark of 360,000 miles.
