Their observations and assertions are what motivated the oil articles, and really changed my thinking about Synthetics.
First of all, the left hand number, the one with the W, measures viscosity at sub-freezing temperatures, and generally indicate the temperaturer at which viscosity is around 6000 cP. the right hand number, the larger one, is the measure of viscosity in the 40C to 100C range, and reflect normal operating viscoity of 8 to 15 cP, depending on grade. It just can't make a difference whether the oil reaches 6000 cP at -20C or -40 C if it's normally operating at 12 cP at 100C, can it? That's when I learned about HTHS, the conditions in the bearings. That is where conventional oils lose their effectiveness as compared to synthetics. Also, the HTHS required for a 10W40 or 5W40 is MUCH LESS than the HTHS required for a 15W40 or straight weight 40. But a full synthetic 5W40 has the same HTHS as a 40 straight weight conventional oil!
