They didn't delve into the procedure they used but the 26 MPG was a Toyota Corolla 5 speed--they didn't have a Civic in the test for some reason. The Imprezza got 21 MPG overall which was the worst (I get better than that with my NG900 w/150K driving fairly agressively). I agree their results seemed a bit pessimistic. I do know that mileage in the high twenties is pretty routine for 9-3's which isn't too far off the mark from what your're likely to get with a so called economy car. If you compare a 9-3 with a Civic sedan for 379 pounds more in weight and a few miles per gallon difference you get so much more car--great suspension, brakes, performance, creature comforts, etc. How you drive a car makes a huge difference and if you drive a Saab like it's a Civic you can get economy that isn't that far off--which was my point.
