While what you say is partly true that we are comparing an almost bottom of the line Honda to a near luxury car, the EX was significantly cheaper, but not vastly cheaper (as I would expect) than a new 9-3 SS after discounting! I was surprised how much a Honda civic can cost new! And you need to get up to EX level to get rear disc brakes etc. - stuff we take for granted!
Our 900 has required a lot of maintenance (consider us worst case). Grand total cost of 10 years of ownership has been about the same as leasing a base model Honda Civic... Buying a base model Civic would likely have been cheaper + resale is higher (until it becomes a rust bucket in 10 years)... Not all c900's are as needy though: parents' '89 has had virtually zero problems (replaced the rack, that's about it in 20 years, ignoring consumables)...
From the perspective of a driver in a northern climate (aka salt), engine repair is only part of the equation. It's a lot easier + cheaper to fix something under the hood than to deal with a rusting carcass! The body on our c900 is holding up better than many Asian cars 10 years newer...
Bottom line is there are pros + cons to both cars and people buy them for different reasons...
