Dear Ari,
Thank you so much for your kind and thorough responses to my questions. I appreciate you taking the time so much.
Regarding the intermittent "shimmy" when idling, no it does not go away when I move from AUTO to ECON, or even when I turn it to OFF. I did think of that, and so I have tried it when idling at a stop sign, for example. It continues. It's like a nice smooth running sound, and then the shimmy, and then the nice smooth running sound, and then the shimmy...just like that, on and on consistently. The shimmy happens about every couple to three seconds or so.
As for the high-pitched squeal, here's what happened. I drove the car down the highway for about 50-65 miles, and then I was getting off at an exit. (I didn't hear the sound while driving down the highway.) As I exited, and came to a slow crawl, the sound started. High pitched squeal, very loud, and lasted about a minute, then stopped. Down the road a bit more, it occurred again. I wasn't turning at the time, but had turned a bit earlier.
I tried shutting the heat/ac unit to OFF when this occurred, and it SEEMED like the sound stopped shortly thereafter, but it could have been coincidental. I haven't heard the sound since, but have only driven a short distance in town, and haven't been using the heat since either.
I could not get the sound to occur at the dealership, and so he said he couldn't do anything about it. I told him that I had described the sound accurately, but he said that he can't count on that. I asked his mechanic to look at it, and the mechanic said, "Well, possibly the blower motor is starting to go. I'll ask Bob if I can replace it." So he asked the owner/salesman, and Bob said he's not going to replace anything that is "just starting to go." He said that maybe it's NOT the blower motor, and he's not going to go in there and start replacing things when he has no idea if there's even a problem. I said there's obviously a problem when you're hearing a very loud high-pitched squeal coming from your car, and he said that he hasn't heard any such thing.
I'm sure he'll be more than happy to replace anything I want him to replace when the cost is on me in about 700 miles or so.
As for the "grinding" sort of sound I heard when entering a sharp-turn on ramp, he took the car and did what he called "some doughnuts" in the dealership parking lot and didn't hear anything so he said it's probably nothing. "Maybe you were at an angle and something was scraping on the wheel because of the angle you were turning at."
Sure is tough to trust these guys. But a car with 100,000 miles could/should/might need some big work. After paying $7000 for the car, I'd like him to do the work before the warranty runs out.
Thank you again for any thoughts/guidance you might have for me, Ari. I appreciate your help more than you know.
Julia
