My '90 2.3CDT had traction control (one of the first 9000s to have it, so bound to fail at some point). Once I sussed that it wouldn't idle well, I could drive it without too much hassle. I dealt with it a few times before I could get it fixed by a dealer (pedal pot binding in its housing - a known fault with the very early TCS, and fixed by the dealer modifying the housing with a heat gun!)
I never considered calling a tow-truck. Now, when the con-rod came through the block (and the bearing cap through the sump) on my Aero - *then* I called a tow-truck (and the fire service, as I watched the oil draining onto the cat and burning brightly...)
