I think the limp-home mode works just fine, it's a LIMP-home mode so don't expect full performance or drivability. My "TCS CTRL" warninglight went on yesterday and I have been driving around for two days (will look in to it tomorrow) without any major problem. Yes, It is a little heavy to push the accelerator wich makes it a little awkward at traffic lights. Perhaps it is a little easier with atomatic gearbox? The reason for disconnecting the A/C-compressor is that the idle speed control is performed by the Electronic Throttel System (a part of the TCS-system). If the compressor is engaged without the ETS working, you will risk a engine stop.
If this is a big issue, why not try for your self? Pull the ETS-fuse and start the car ("TCS CTRL" will stay on). Remember that if a fault occurs while driving you have to release the throttle to engage the throttle wire.
