Those vent temps were with the front doors open on a 100+, high humidity afternoon in the sun. When I shut the doors, the vent temps went down to 50. Driving around, I hit 48 on "LO".
Accepting the theory that heating the bulb will increase refrigerant flow, then removing it from the exaporator tube will heat it, cause more flow, which is going to increase low side pressure. I had been convinced that this was not correct by someone else a month ago, but after the discussion yesterday, I am back to believing it.
The reason that temperature increases when flow increases beyond a certain point is that the evaporator is getting more refrigerant than it can vaporize. Also, using the 9 degree superheat standard, if your low side is 50, your evaporator is only going to be around 41F.
If you try pulling the bulb off, you will see what I mean.
