you are right about the pistons hitting the valve. Like most modern engines, the valves and the piston will occupy the same space at different points in the crank rotation. A broken chain will yield anywhere from 2 to 8 bent valves. The engine is not totaled, but it will need new valves, a chain, and a head gasket. The parts are not that expensive, but the labor can be quite high. When my chain broke, it was $100 worth of valves, $60 for the head gasket kit, $160 for a timing chain kit, and $300 for the machine shop work on the head. Add a couple of days of your labor or 12 hours at an Indie for a total of $1500-$1800 to have the whole thing done.
I did the job myself and it began a month long process of "while I have this apart, why don't I do that." I probably replaced another $500 worth of other parts, like the balance shaft chain, motor mounts, thermostat, hoses, and similar things.
