No, I really can't understand it either ... everything I read says that this shouldn't happen. I keep waiting for something bad to surface but it's been quite a while now. I commute with it daily, including fairly regular trips at 65-75 MPH for > 100 miles.
I measured compression in all 4 cylinders and it was fairly high and even across them, so presumed that the valves were pretty-much OK. The engine is still quiet, mileage still good (26-30 MPG) and I saw no apparent damage when the head was off aside from the head gasket problems which I believe to be unrelated. The chain broke with the engine almost at idle and without any (apparent) noise. After it happened, I didn't even suspect the chain for a long while because I had imagined a failure like that would be fairly spectacular.
Oh well, sorta makes up for the myriad of other little problems these 9000s keep nagging me with. I miss the reliability of my old 900T, but at > 300K miles it was time for it to retire (still running fine, so I gave it to a college student for local commuting).
