The timing chain broke without warning about 2 years ago on my 93 Turbo at about 140K miles. The general consensus seemed to be that the engine was probably badly damaged, but I really liked the car and happened to have a new chain on hand (I was planning to replace the chain on my *son's* 9000 at 180K miles), so elected to invest a little time and effort into trying to resurrect it.
Removing the valve cover, I could see no apparent damage to the gears or tensioner, but the broken chain was, as I had guessed, in a little pile atop the cam gears, so I elected to install the new chain and check cylinder compressions. (BTW: I found that, with great care, it was possible to "rethread" a new chain to replace the broken one without removing the timing chain cover) After replacing the chain and retiming, compression seemed just fine in all cylinders and the car started and ran just fine.
I've been driving it pretty-much every day since then. I suppose that *some* damage must have occurred, but the car still runs very nicely. A few months back, I had to replace a leaky head gasket and found no apparent damage to the valves or head from the timing chain incident. Your mileage may vary, of course, but it's not *entirely* out the question that you will luck out too ...
