The term 'total' usually means that it'll cost more to fix than to simply replace. Dropping the chain will do significant damage. At a minimum, valves will be bent. If a piston breaks, metal fragments will be scattered throughout the engine. The shock of the pistons hitting the valves can damage bearings, and components that don't break outright (pistons, wrist pins, connecting rods) will be stressed and may fail later.
If I had an engine with 30K miles and otherwise in good shape, and the chain broke, it would probably be worthwhile to repair it. If the engine had 180K and the valves and pistons met, I'd shop for a new one.
