Lower gears make it easier for the engine to move the car, whether the clutch is slipping or not. When you're in 4th or 5th, the clutch is being taxed harder, the engine is trying to accelerate the same 3200 pound car with less mechanical advantage - leads to clutch slippage. When it gets really bad, it will also start showing the same slippage symptoms in lower gears.
Unless you know that the clutch has never been replaced (you bought the car used, right?), you can only assume that it's 181K old. I had my clutch replaced as part of a tranny swap at about that mileage, the clutch was still OK , and I had no idea if it was original, but as long as it was all opened up, ....
