Filling Habits & Gauge Nonlinearity

For the last seven years, I have always filled to full tank then allowed to drop to near empty (sometimes even "R", wherein the orange light lights up). Is this method shortening my fuel pump life, or is this perfectly alright? Should I change my ways?
I have also long noticed that the engine takes longer to start (but only in the "morning") as the tank gets closer to empty. This phenomenon begins to appear when the fuel gauge is around 1/2, and gets obviously worse (longer cranking time) as it drops past 1/4. Is it just me, or is this a well-known 9000 quirk?
Of course, I think 3/4 on the gauge really means ~1/2 (roughly), 1/2 really means ~1/4, 1/4 really means ~1/8, and so on.
On the other hand, I once had the gauge at the bottom of the "R" range, with the computer reading 0.0 more miles left, but the engine was still running as I made it to the gas station.
