I've never replaced a fuel pump (knock on simulated wood trim). And that's with cars up into the 150K mile range and higher. That doesn't mean they don't fail, it's just that they don't fail that often.
As the others noted, keeping your tank more full than empty helps. I have to believe that an occasional dose of dry-gas helps because it keeps corrosion from water down. At the same time, I would avoid lots of fancy gasoline additives. I used to have a devil of a time with my old 99 gas gauge every time I put in too much fuel-injector cleaner - I'm pretty sure the stuff attacked the wiring, and the gauge would go nuts for the next few hundred miles. If you use the stuff, make sure you dump it into a full tank, not a half-empty one.
But sometimes things just break. You can do everything right, and they still do.
To paraphrase a favorite author - "Notice how everything in the universe dies? I'd say that's a design flaw".
