Weight and size have already been mentioned. Cars have gotten a lot bigger. More steel, but it is also much stronger and tailored blanks (different "b" pillar thicknesses as you go up to roof for example). A lot more sound insulation. 6 and 7 speed transmissions are much heavier especially autos. Engines are lighter if they have Al blocks. Seats are heavier as are larger tires and wheels. 65 series tire is best all around for mileage.
MPG at highway speeds mainly controlled by Aerodynamics. People are usually surprised to find that a Ferrari or Lambo requires more Hp to push thru the air than a c900. Mostly due to their larger frontal areas. A c900 21 sq ft frontal area is pretty small.
In city weight is main factor> Can't get around fact that the heavier the car the more hp it takes to accelerate and more hp is absorbed by tire rolling resistance.
Compare to 84 Honda Civic: 38 mpg at 85 mph. 1,900 lbs weight and a very small frontal area. But it will also fold up on you like tissue paper in a crash.
