for some reason, our fridge is coldest at the top where the light is so I hadn't noticed really (maybe that's where cold air gets pumped out, would make sense)... it's fairly new and was very efficient, at least for it's size at the time... the old one it replaced was 30% smaller, and used something like 3x the energy!
a few years ago, we had something here I found funny called "project porch light" where the objective was to get 1 cfl in each household by replacing the porchlight (often on all night, so, idealistically, a prime candidate). Well, my porch light cfl saves lots of energy! whenever it is below about -10C, it won't turn on! that is pretty much every night all winter long... ha! imho, the "pros" of cfls have been vastly overstated, and the "cons" fairly understated: Hg + cold aside, that the failure mode (overheating/burning) would be considered catastrophic in any other ee endeavour, and that they must be installed with "adequate ventilation" to avoid premature execution of said failure mode, and that <50% (<20% in my house) of existing fixtures meet the criteria of "adequate ventilation"... at least they have significantly improved over time (at least in terms of colour + turn on time)... still, I have yet to have a cfl hit the mtbf stated on teh packaging, even in bare sockets in my basement... don't get me wrong, I use plenty of cfls (and was an early adopter for the basement), but I'm not enthusiastic re the coming incandescent ban!
I guess I'm not surprised that the market favours warmer climates! actually, there is skiing/snowboarding in Hawaii (kind of), and Hawaii is awesome... the Dubai hill is, well, impressive + yet underwhelming ;-)... I'm pretty happy with winter but I can see how others (particularly those that don't like winter activities) might not be...
