The glacial erratics (big boulders) in Central Park, like those all over the northeast, are leftovers from the last ice age. This is not news.
Most of Greenland has up to 800,000 years of ice and snowpack. The current ice in the center of the island is presently about 2 miles thick. There were once tress along the southern coast, perhaps even up to 300 miles inland, and fossilized trees about 2 million years old have been found on the northern coast of the island. But 2 million years ago the island was ice free and the planet was far warmer than it is today.
Desertification in the middle east and Persia was not due to farming alone but also to shifts in climate. Those shifts, BTW, are documented in ice cores in Greenland, Antarctica and in sea floor sediments.
Sure, ice/snowpacks come and go, but both expansion and loss of ice--either sea ice or land ice--has significant impact on climate.
