It's different because the point of science to reveal facts. The efficacy of science is proven in accomplishments. There will always be poor science, or people claiming to be using science who aren't, but that doesn't mean you lump science in with religion. If a paper appears in a peer reviewed journal, it is accessible by anyone, and can be criticised by anyone. Sometimes bad research gets published (remember "cold fusion"?), but eventually it either gets forgotten (if it was low impact), or revealed as wrong (if it garnered a lot of attention). Peer review is the method of putting it up to scrutiny. If not by that method, then what method would you suggest?
