I took another quick look at this at lunch... McIntyre's work looks fairly genuine and superficially has the potential to be valid (note it was published in a peer reviewed journal). Let's say my opinion on that matter is similar to the reviewers at Nature, there's probably something there, but given the broad nature of the journal vs the scope of what was being presented, better to publish elsewhere in detail, and once accepted, a concise note in general terms citing the detailed paper would be more appropriate for Nature... I don't see any conspiracy there... my impression is that is actually the normal way developments in highly technical fields end up in Nature... I also find it hard to believe Mann's work was not subject to peer review... the reviewers probably just didn't catch that statistical flaw (assuming McIntyre's assertions are correct, and they do sound plausible).

I also want to clarify my statement that "not refuting much of the basic science" does not mean I think Peden's explanations are complete, useful, and/or not misleading... Some of the stuff in his "essay" is very weak... particularly the bit where he tries to explain close packing, which is totally irrelevant in gases... and the point he's trying to make is not the right way to do it anyway... graphs with minimal labeling drawn in some drawing program such that curve shapes are off + misleading (that is one strange looking blackbody plot + vibrational/rotational spectra are not histogram like "boxes")... I could go on, but you get my point... I would not suggest that anyone base their opinion re AGW on the oversimplified physics in this article (even ignoring the cherry-picking of his references)...

James...
