Gary,
Pros & Cons
STAND ALONE ECU
Advantages
1. Direct Control over ignition & fuel maps
2. Flexibility on tuning
3. Fairly easy to tune for max power
Disadvantages
1. Initial investment cost high
2. Costs from dyno tuning time high
3. Daily drivability extremely difficult to perfect as illustrated by Kooch’s post above yours. He may figure all situations out fairly soon or maybe never.
SECONDARY FUELING SYSTEM
Advantages
1. Lower cost
2. Easy to tune
3. Daily drivability unaffected
Disadvantages
1. No control over ignition timing
TRIONIC 5.0
Advantages
1. Sophisticated software controlling ignition timing & fuel injection.
2. No tuning – kind of a plug and play system
3. A wide range of software to choose from in Sweden
Disadvantages
1. Complex installation process
2. Potential high cost in acquiring required system components
3. Software must be acquired from overseas.
So what do I think of these options? I feel a stand alone ECU is only worth the hassle if the ignition timing control is an option selected, otherwise, a person might as well just select a secondary injection system which will be alot easier and less expensive to tune and install. My top choice though would be to install Trionic 5 like Damien did. This system in my opinion will allow for achieving max power most efficient and safely. My next project will likely involve the building of an engine with T5 or greater controlling it.
Good luck Gary!
Steve
