...with t5's, and I know that it's a much less complex matter to make hardware changes on a t5. However, I, like many others find this discussion very interesting. Although I'm not an automotive engineer (I teach applied mathematics) I have some academic background in M.E. (heat transfer, thermo, compressible and incompressible fluids). I recall reading a few posts from one of the Hirsch tuners. He has plenty of direct experience with tuning t7 vehicles. He noted that every element of the drivetrain, from air filter to mufflers, goes into the calibrated values for PID. By changing any of these parts you affect this calibration, then, lambda integration will lead to fuel adaption. Anyway, his point was that any hardware changes "have enormous impacts on MAF calibration." Changing the downpipe, which affects the "filling ratio" of the cylinders, would surely impact said calibration. The spike on Eric's y-variable (boost pressure) must surely be evidence of this. It's too bad that the guy from Hirsch, Dr Boost, or any of the other tuners that have working-experience with t7, aren't around to lend some of their insights!
