For what it's worth, after my 1989 ECU died, and buying a couple more on Ebay that were DOA, I ended up putting a 1990 in my car, which has worked perfectly the last 5 or 6 years. There was a period when I was driving around with one of the DOA units and a jumper wire across the fuel relay pins (that was all that was wrong with that particular ECU). It was kind of inconvenient, as you had to remember to connect and disconnect it every time. Luckily that 1990 turned up before I got to wiring a toggle switch into the dash.

Right now, though, you've got me considering the matter...

I'm also wishing I was a lot better with computer hardware. I could envision someone replacing the brains of an ECU with something like a Raspberry Pi and programming it up not only to do the complete job of the ECU, but display everything it was doing to a tablet via bluetooth and accepting programming updates. Considering I've got three old ECUs lying around, and a spare Pi... hmmmm....

The worst part of it would be reverse engineering what the ECU is doing for a living so you could duplicate it.

For now, though, the limit of my engineering plans are to maybe drive around with a length of speaker wire leading to a small panel light in the cabin from the pump terminals so I can see if there's juice to the pump next time it dies.
