Phase...that's the word I was looking for.
What I did moments ago:
-Cranked with fuel pump fuse removed to make sure nothing remained in the cylinders/intake
-Disconnected injector 4 and cranked. Same symptom.
-Cranked with fuel pump fuse removed to blow out fuel from cylinder 1
-Disconnected injector 1 as well, and cranked. Same symptom.
-Pulled plugs, disconnected fuel pump. Cranks effortlessly, no strange noises.
-Installed plugs and cranked. Everything sounds normal.
-Installed DI and cranked. Everything normal.
-Connected injectors and plugged in fuel pump fuse. Engine tries to fire, makes the horrible noise, shudders, and locks up. Turning it by hand for a half rotation after this "lock up" is particularly difficult, but then it's resistance as usual with the plugs in.
Plugs are about six months old, but the ceramic looks crack free.
As a side note, my oil pressure light stays on through all this cranking and I don't see any oil from the sump on the cams - only the new stuff I poured in during reassembly. I haven't touched the oil system, and no leaks from either of the banjo connectors for the turbo inlet line.
