I don't know about a definitive answer. Buy the newest one you can afford and hope for the best. I bought my '95 SET near the end of the factory warranty and I don't think there has been in a time in those last two years, 25k miles where everything has worked right. I've put an average of $150/month in maintenance into the car, out of my pocket, the factory warranty covered another roughly $600 and the extended warranty has covered another $900 on top of that.
After all that, my drivers seat heat doesn't work (again), there are apparantly unfixable clunks in the front end, and there is some engine control gremlin that the dealer can't find/fix either. Perhaps mine is just a bad example, others have glowing reports about their cars.
Some friends of mine, a recently retired couple was looking to replace their beloved '89 900T with a 97-98 900 SETC and asked me what I thought of mine. Based on my experiences, I could not in good conscience recommend that they buy one; they ended up with a Lexus ES300.
Bottom line, if you like the car, buy it. These are fun, somewhat unique cars with a good blend of performance and practicality. Be prepared for lots of maintenance issues, though. If the car turns out fine and the maint. issues don't show up, then you've come out ahead. If the maint. issues do show up, then you're prepared for them.
