I got my first SAAB in 1980 (a 1979 99GL). When I test drove the 07 9-3 I was reminded of that old 99. The center console is bigger now, maybe that contributes to your impression of smallness/narrowness. When I bought a new 900S in 1987 it felt a little larger than the 99GL.
Here is a direct comparison of dimensions for a 1979 99 and the 2007 93SS;
Leg room(99GL=39.1 and 93SS=42.3) Head room (99GL=38.4 and 93SS=38.9) Hip room fr(99GL=51.8 and 93SS= not listed) Shouolder room fr(99GL=53.5 and 93SS=56.3) leg room rear(99GL=36.9 and 93SS=35.1)
