the sound of the engine was definitely recorded from a rally car

... not the car in the ad... the usual 'professional driver closed course' applies here. How many cars are really driven the way they are driven/portrayed in ads anyway? If ads reflected real life driving, most of them would be rather boring... I think the WRX will remain hot for quite some time, but for the type of use I could give it (due to the conditions I unfortunately HAVE to drive in) I think it would be a waste... if I lived in rural New England I think it would be a blast! When you consider the technology included in the WRX the price is a bargain. I think most people do not fully understand what is included in these cars. If you want leather, carbon fiber, North European build quality the the WRX would be at least $10,000 more. See Audi S4. This may be the niche the Nissan Skyline is aimed for when it comes here... or, hopefully if the 4WD next generation 9-3 does materialize, it will probably be around $40k, so in that territory. I applaud Subaru for giving buyers the option to have so much technology and thrills available to them in this price segment. If you want to impress your friends and neighbors, the WRX is not the car for you, because only true enthusiasts will ever know what it is about. The average person will look at it and think it was a $15,000 econobox with a wheel/spoiler upgrade. If you tell them you paid $25k they will think you are nuts, but it's your money! There are plenty people who think a base model 9-3 at (say) $25k is a waste of money, it looks so small and you could have a Crown Victoria for the same money! Each to his/her own. Not many people buy a new car and run it to 200,000 miles, so the issue of how it will last ten years from now is not really relevant to the new car buyer. I doubt the WRX will drive like new at 100,000 while a well maintained SAAB probably will. If we are complaining about what the WRX will be worth at trade in, last time I checked, SAAB did not do too well in that department either. On the subject of sound, have you heard Per Eklunds' Viggen? Frankly, it doesn't sound like music to my ears, but that's how many turbocharged engines sound when tuned to perform to the maximum, especially smaller displacement four cylinder ones. If you pay $25k for a car that is really well built (there are increasingly few options), you will not have the mechanical sophistication or performance of the WRX. I know it needs 3,000 rpm to get anywhere, 4,000 to really start. My Porsche 911 is the same. Of course that means it will be a highly impractical daily driver for a lot of people. For those whom it is not impractical, what joy!
