Your previous post sounded like you were saying there was antifreeze in the trans fluid--made more sense when I read it again. And you don't say how many miles he drives a year. When I was in college and money was tight I bought a new Chevette. It worked really well for me-I had a fixed monthly expense with no surprises and a reliable, economical car. I'd lease it for three years (it's easy to get out the last year). Keep in mind that he probably won't be ready to buy a new car the first week he has a paying job. Odds are he'll have to move somewhere new, rent and furnish an apartment, plus all the hoopla of starting a new, demanding job. Not having car worries (on top of everything else) at this point in his life would be well worth the expense, but that's my take.
