owning a car in college? Isn't that just a luxury? I bought my first car after working for almost a year as an engineer... and I bought it outright, in cash, it was used (off lease) at the time and I still have it (a c900). I went through this phase of life with zero debt. I didn't have debt until I had a mortgage, and I still have never owed anything on a car or had a car payment.
I say this somewhat tongue in cheek because some parts of the world do require car transportation for safety reasons or distance reasons... but at that age, with a little resourcefulness, it is often possible to do everything by bike and public transit if one lives in a city.
I think with this particular car, it depends on how solid it is. If he likes it and it's paid for, and it can hold up a bit longer, why not. If it is taking up valuable time, maybe there is a better way...
