Just my thoughts on the $ 600 fuel pump. It's very nice that it is an easy procedure to replace the fuel pump on the Saab, and by my experience as well as the few posts seen on the board it would seem to be a very reliable pump. I contrast this with my Ford SHO, where the fuel tank had to dropped from the auto to replace the pump - a $ 40 item at autozone. The OEM pump would just stop working when tank temperatures reached at certain point, so on a very hot summer day, car would die. Dealer cost to replace this cheapo pump was quoted at over $ 450, parts and labor.
So I would expect that the Saab pump assembly could be bought at half the $ 600 from non dealer sources, and you probably get a whole pump assembly, do not know if you can just get the pump itself, which would be less.
So I would rather pay $ 300 for a quality pump, very easy to install, than pay $ 40 for a cheapo pump which is a royal pia to install and far more prone to fail again.
Although I'm very critical of the Saab DI design, $ 300 for what is in this unit, seems a reasonable price. And remember, Saab parts are often unique to Saab, single sourced and low volume in mfg. OEM parts for Japanese cars tend to be pricey as well, but the quality is high.
So same as it ever was, dealer is highest cost, indy less, and DIY least expense. I don't think the dealer's cost model has changed much over the yrs, they have a high overhead to cover.
Water dissolving, water removing, there is water at the bottom of our fuel tanks (hope not)
