IIRC, the 'antenna' is in the rear of the center console (left of rear ashtray) so the higher up you are, the better. That's why the holding it up trick works.
I looked it up in AllData and it seems the Japanese market receiver comes with a external antenna for the receiver because their remotes have to be lower-powered (but same frequency). I wonder if you can get this part anywhere, and/or if the receivers all accomodate it.
The best I did was a good 150 feet. Typically 10-15 feet. Docs say 5-10 meters. My NG was worse, usually with 5 feet or less. That antenna was under the seat (!).
They also say change the battery once a year instead of waiting for the SID to bug you about low battery.
