keyless remote range (or lack thereof)

The range of the 9-5 keyless remote isn't very good, in fact it's pitiful compared with the other vehicles we own and have owned. The owner's manual says that the range is reduced in cold weather. It's darned cold here now (well below zero), and neither of our remotes worked at all last night. We will be taking the car to the dealer soon for its 10,000 mile service, but is there anything we can or should do in the meantime? I discovered last night that there is no key opening in the passenger side door, so if the lock in the driver's door had been frozen, I guess we would have been stranded.
My wife (it's her car) likes to control things from a distance (she hits the garage door opener from the road as soon as the garage is in view). The sorry performance of the 9-5 keyless remote does not make her happy.
