First of all, I can relate to your problem. I am the first person to blow my own head gasket if I feel that I'm getting screwed. I'm 29 years old and I have owned over 15 different cars. 8 of which were Saabs. The very first Saab I owned was a '89 9000 automatic. I LOVED THAT CAR. Problem was, I bought the car in 1995 with 157k, and 3 months after I owned it the transmission went. I bought the car from a used car dealer in central Mass. that specifically deals with Saabs. I had them fix it and I paid for it. It didn't last long, and that's when I blew my head gasket. After not having the car for a month and a half (6 WEEKS !!!), I finally realized a few things:
1. Used car salesmen and politicians are cut from the very same cloth. And that I won't win - in court, in the car, or at the dealer.
2. I will never buy another Saab with an automatic transmission (except for parts).
3. In cases that involve liability < $3000.00, most lawyers can't be bothered with it. Which means that you have to do all the court stuff yourself - yuck.
4. After having owned 7 C900's, I have learned that I feel very uncomfotable driving anything else. The price I pay for that is repairs big and small for the sake of keeping a car on the road that the average car owner would have given up on along time ago. Example: My '88 900 blew it's head gasket back in June. I paid Mecca Motors in Allston $850 bucks to replace it. Why ? Because I had already relaced the steering rack, exhaust, tires, axle, driver's door, and etc. I had already invested a substantial amount of money keeping this dude on the road. So after "rebuilding" half of the car $350 at a time, I concluded that I now know what doesn't need to be replaced.

I will summarize this in the following way, and it pains me to say this:
If you looked on this board prior to purchasing your car, that should have in some ways, served as your Caveat Emptor. I don't have a statistical analysis to back this up, but I would bet that 75% of the posts on the C900 board pertain to problems people are having with their car or ways to improve/rebuild their car. Most Saabnetters are fairly passionate about their vehicles; hence their relentless pursuit to keep them on the road. The C900 is a great car and is fun to drive. If you like the car, then consider the head gasket an investment in a vehicle that can give you a couple of 100ks of service. But you have to accept the good with the bad. The bad being, as one fellow Saabnetter said: "If you want a new car save the radiator cap and replace the rest". And look at the bright side, once you have replaced the head gasket, you will never likely have to do it again.

If you really like the car, then I would suggest letting your Saab Indie do the repair rather than letting an unpleasant experience with a person or dealership taint your view of the car. It's an older car, you had your suspicions, you saw this board, you believed the salesman, and you bought the car. Just get it fixed and enjoy your car again. Of course this is just my opinion.
