such as "if the Spanish government didn't support exploration at that time, we all (well, those of us in the USA) wouldn't be here discussing it right now." LOL. Whereas in reality Henry VII of England would have funded the expedition to the extent that the Italian merchants' sponsorship wouldn't cover. The Italian merchants etc were covering more than half the expense of Columbus' expedition anyway. You know what else? "the Spanish government" did not even exist. The Queen of Castille did say no to Columbus on the advice of her advisors and sent Columbus away until the King of Aragon suggested a yes answer, as a strategic balance move against Portugal's explorations to the east.
Based on NASA's pathetic record, if we were in eminent danger of astroid strike, resources would be much better spent on someone else to help avoid the pending disaster. The logic of doubling NASA budget when it's already mismanaging what it has is akin to doubling FEMA budget when it made a hash of rescue effort during Katrina and prevented private sector rescues . . . and forcibly directing resources to bail out government sponsored banks when they were the ones caused the bubble and crash. . . in other words, typical governmental/monopolist logic.
