Did you throw this same post out there on Toyota, Honda and Nissan boards as well? If not, you must really want to be talked into a Saab, because I can't picture anyone here recommending anything from Japan.
Personally, being a new Saab convert, I'd say do anything in your power to go with a new (2001) Saab. I hate used cars of any make, just because of the unknown factor. Your mileage makes a 12k lease unrealistic -- but it is the end of the year, and maybe some dealers up your way are motivated to make a great deal -- lease or otherwise -- on a new or demo model. I'm on Staten Island, so I know your area, and from what I've heard (I only got mine in June) these cars are great in the snow as well -- something you'll definitely be contending with soon. I went with the 9-5 base 4 cylinder, for economy reasons, and the power and handling of this car is remarkable. And windy roads? -- you definitely want something safe, which again makes Saab a natural. I don't know anything about the reliability of used Saabs other than what I've read here, and they seem pretty rugged. But I'd still try for a new Saab as a first choice, used Saab second -- and if nothing there works, I hear a lot of good things about the Passat.
