My in-laws have a gorgeous '92. The only thing you must have is detailed service records. When looking at one, have a prepurchase inspector pay extra-special attention to the timing chain - tension, funny noises, etc. Otherwise, the MB diesels are good forever. Mine is just a baby with 140K on it, and it still looks/runs like new. I use it for my daily commute and get 30+ mpg. If you get serious, check out the diesel mailing list archives at mbz.org.
