Well my first choice would be a SAAB -- maybe an Edwardian Gray SPG -- but since you're lokking beyond SAABs, here's an alternative you are not considering: a Ford Contour SE V-6 with 5-speed. This would be a fun car to drive over your route. You could probably find a good one for HALF of your budget. Only disadvantage is small legroom in rear, which is not a drawback in a commuter car.
