The base model has a higher profile tire than the SE and Viggen which softens the ride. For the exact suspension specs go to the model info at the homepage of this website. It's refered to as the "old" chassis because it was designed and developed nearly ten years ago by both Saab and GM. Since then other manufactuters have realeased new chassis's to their line-up, BMW and Audi, while Saab has just refined, upgraded and facelifted the NG 900 into the 9-3.
As far comparing them to Euro cars it really depends which model. The BMW's (3 series) have a very stiff feel to them, which is great for dry handling, but not necessarily pleasant on uneven roads. The Mercedes C class is suprisingly harsh as well and un-sporty. Additionally, as with most rear wheel drive cars, they aren't as stable when the rain/snow comes around as front wheel drive cars - Saabs.
I'm happy with the overall ride of my 9-3 (base). Sure, the suspension could be tighter and the chassis more rgid, but I new that when I bought it and was compfortable with it. If you want the "sportier" ride then upgrading the tire/wheel and suspension is available, and the Viggen is just a few upgrades away from serious slalom capabilties.
Hope this sheds some light.
