Great, book, I agree. You should check out Tunberg's 9-5: A Personal Story book, too.
As far as OG900 vs. NG/9-3:
Frankly, the OG900 was a car ahead of its time back in 1979. It had a sophisticated suspension set up, reasonable engines, and stellar crash safety. The OG is still a very safe car today- its body structure holds up better than even the 9-3.
The NG900 was not a particularly advanced car when it came out in '94. It was competent, but little more. The 9-3 was a good update, but the sloppy Opel chassis, front-wheel drive dominated handling and semi-dated semi-independent rear suspension keep it from the top of its class. The BMW 325 and Audi A4 are far better drivers' cars with far more sophisticated suspensions.
The 9-5, however, is nearly as good as the BMW. And I think it handles and rides better than Audi's A6 and even Lexus' GS300/400. It's still not quite as compliant or solid as the BMW or even the Lincoln LS (which is an awesome handling car, btw), but it's darn close. Especially with Saab's budget.
