It is not as simple as independent rear-end is good and a non-independent rear-end is bad. The very best of the all wheel independent designs may be superior but many all wheel independent suspensions really suck and most are very mediocre.
Neither the c900 or the 9000 have an independent rear yet even today they are some of the best handling FWD cars out there.
Moreover, if I had the option I would much prefer a car with a double-wish bone front and a good beam-type rear suspension over most all of the fully independent designs on the road that don't have a double-wish bone front or multi-link front. If you don't have the font suspension right, especially on a FWD, it doesn't really matter what you do with the rear your not going to have a very good handling car.
It is interesting you mention the VW line because at one time these cars had a crude strut based four-wheel independent suspension. Things got better when they moved away from it.
