Hey, I was trying to cheer up Tami here. I have had another issue of Car and Driver since the issue in question, so memory fogged a bit.
Space is admittedly close among all six cars, and although rear interior volume was larger in the Volvo, the subjective measure of rear seat space was highest in the Saab with 3 passengers, and tied for highest with 2 passengers, on which my statement was based (top of page 83). The measure of interior volume in itself does not guarantee greater useful space. For example, unused headroom would be factored into rear interior volume, even if the front seat was up against your knees. Two weekends ago I went to the Detroit Auto Show with three good sized buddies in my 9-3. We sat in a four door 3 series while there, and my friend pointed out that his feet would not slide under the front seats in the BMW as they did in my Saab, and he felt this was a real world comfort advantage.
Additionally, while I agree that there is more to safety than airbags and structure, the article in Car and Driver rightfully points out that "Part of the deficit (braking and skidpad) can be attributed to the all-season tires which give up dry weather grip in exchange for better winter traction". As I mentioned, my 2000 9-3 came with Michelin Pilots (the same as the BMW wore in the article), and while subjective, I have been pleased with grip and stopping distance.
While we can differ on details, the premise of my argument remains the same. This is a 1994 design in competition with either brand new or more recent designs. I maintain that you would be hard pressed to find a better equipped, faster, safer, more practical car for what you would have to pay for the Saab.
