Perhaps a NEW steering rack is $647 (it is after all the same rack used in many GM cars, manufactured by GM's Saginaw Steering subsidiary), but that price is not valid for a REBUILT unit. I replaced my own rack (part cost was about $175 for a Maval rebuilt SAAB rack a few years ago, which included a one year part guarantee) and it took me less than the five hours cited in the database - and this was the first time I had ever done this PITA job. It is OK to add a fraction of an hour to adjust the toe-in setting.

Furthermore, I just bought a rebuilt ZF rack (more expensive than the GM rack) for my Audi A4 and it was "only" $260 after core refund. Even if it was marked up 100%, it's still not $647. This guy is playing games.
