Part of what you pay for parts from a mechanic is their markup, part of it is having a source that can get parts fast and deleiver them and a part of it is the fact they have to stand behind the work and possibly eat all or part of the labor if the part turns out faulty. When I had my used car business I used to wrok with 8 or 9 mechanics and would typically have 4 or 5 cars getting something done at any given time, so I learned a lot about the care and feeding of mechanics. If I shopped around, especailly on line, I could almost always beat my mechaincs prices on parts. Mechanics don't have time to do that--getting it there fast is their priority. My approach was to get a price, comparison shop enough to keep them honest and it was either worth it or it wasn't. If you want to get parts on the cheap and do it yourself, no one is stopping you. If you want professionals to do the job then you pay their price. I don't quibble with my doctor over how much a bandage costs him. You've got to let your mechanic make a living (they typically have a lot of overhead in their shop and equipment)--being a tight ass all the time can really come back to haunt you. Once they get your number they aren't going to want your business all that bad, and when they're busy, you'll be the last guy to get your car worked on. And the day will come when they have you by the short hairs (your tranny goes out three days before your big driving vacation as an example and no one else can get you in), and beleive me they'll really stick it to you. In short, play nice with your machanic and they'll play nice with you and if you don't want to pay their prices then you better figure on doing it all yourself.
