This is a sad story but if you think about it, it happens all the time and everywhere you go. Hospitals, restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets, insurance companies, etc., etc. Everybody is free to make all the money they want. Sometimes you don't even see it because it is so well hidden.
Yes, the price is high. However, it is not out of line. I replaced the steering rack in my old 900 and it took 3 days of hard work in miserable weather (wet snow and cold wind, in a puddle of ice water on my back). I remember thinking "oh, that's why my SAAB guy wanted so much money for this, LOL". The part itself, including complete tie rods, was $100. Rebuilt unit with warranty.
This happens all the time. One time my mom's Impreza stranded her with a broken alternator. The Subaru dealer wanted something like $750 and they couldn't get to it for a week. Instead, I stopped by my favorite u-pull-it junk yard (office clothes and all) and used my BMW toolkit to remove an alternator from an Impreza there. Installed it in the light of a street lamp same night when I came back from work. The cost? $14...
Do you see my point?
