Just because the incompetent wannabe nannies themselves can't do it themselves, just because the supposed average dummy test subjects can't do it, they insist nobody should be allowed to do it! Never mind the specific individuals' abilities that they are ignoring. There was a time when the Luddites wanted to ban GPS devices too as that too was allegedly too distracting. Sure, the moment the driver is reading and responding to the GPS (or on the phone) is indeed dividing the drivers' attention, yet the net result of keeping the driver on the right track and not having to be anxious about getting lost or late for the entire rest of the trip is far than making up for the momentary distraction. Overall, the presence of the device actually reduces distraction and anxiety for the judicious user. Of course, there are idiots who yak on the phone all the time despite their inability to handle both that and driving, just like there are idiot new GPS users who fiddle with the device too much while driving. Heck, there are idiots who fiddle with the paper map too much while driving; shall we ban all maps too? What about banning all billboards? and banning all road signs?
